Become the employer every employee wants to work for
Mirka Mitse
Starting with an example:
People hired by Google create LinkedIn posts full of emotion, sharing lengthy texts where they open up about their experiences, often talking about their childhood or how they struggled in their studies. They thank everyone involved in the hiring process by name and always speak enthusiastically about the future.
Someone else starting a new position at another company uses a ready-made LinkedIn template, which goes something like this: “I am excited to announce that I am starting my new job at X as Y.”
Anyone seeing these two posts would automatically think it must feel great to work for Google (maybe, maybe not, but the assumption is a positive one).
In short, this is Employer Branding.
Here are the steps you can take to establish your business as a prestigious employer in the market. And no, you don’t need to be a tech multinational to achieve this.
Size doesn’t matter.
Just read on.
1. Create hiring processes that value candidates and demonstrate respect for everyone’s experience and time. One of the goals is for people who didn’t get the job to talk about how they enjoyed the process and felt respected.
2. Train team managers in people management. This is something that hardly happens anywhere. The role of a manager is crucial for the success and growth of any business. And it’s a career path. Just as someone needs training to become an engineer, anyone who wants to manage teams needs training, too. Otherwise, what we often see in the market is the creation of toxic work environments, lack of trust, employees not caring about the company, lack of motivation and ultimately many employees leaving, which creates high costs for businesses.
3. Develop a corporate culture that will unite your people and give them a sense of belonging.
4. Reward your people for what they do well and support them to improve and succeed.
The results:
- Many candidates will want to work with you, so the duration and cost of hiring will be drastically reduced.
- You will be able to choose the most suitable among the best candidates in the market, so productivity and efficiency will increase, thus aiding business development.
- You will be able to devise a strategy and follow it, as your people will trust you and support your vision.
